As a soon-to-be graduating student and a third-year transfer, I understand how navigating a new college campus comes with challenges of its own. Whether that be in the form of finding your classes to finding your scene, Texas A&M University at Galveston (TAMUG) is committed to fostering involvement especially for new or transfer students. Even so, here’s a few extra pointers:
Nine times out of ten, there are feelings of hesitancy and confusion when starting on a new campus. This is particularly true in a place that is so tradition-rich like TAMUG.
To approach this, there are plenty of hotspots around campus that are inclusive to everyone, independent of class year or major. These include the Rec Center, the outside volleyball court, Shell Beach, the 1973 Center, Mugdown, and the pool (which actually has real depth)!
So how do I get to these places or find my way around? As mentioned before, navigating the campus can be a feat in itself. In fact, my first class here was Introduction to Ocean Engineering … even though I am a marine science major.
To prevent this from happening to you, I suggest using the campus map for buildings which can be accessed by simply searching “TAMUG map” in any search engine. If you struggle with maps or want to find more specific rooms, ask any faculty or your fellow students as they are happy to help.
Once you have a general idea of places, try paying attention to landmarks. To start you off, there is an anchor in front of the library (where it is a tradition to rub the top of it for good luck before final exams), a boat propeller statue behind the cafeteria, a clock tower in the center of campus, and T-dock on shell beach.
Finally, although you’ve most likely heard this a lot, do consider joining intramurals and/or organizations because, truly, it is the best and quickest means to meet future friends and hear about any events of interest.
From one transfer Aggie to another, it takes one to know one. If you keep showing up and reminding yourself that college is a comprehensive experience, then you’re bound to enjoy your time at TAMUG!
